St Andrews Catholic Church - Penola Hub

Penola Community Hub, established under the guidance of St Andrews Catholic Church, is a testament to the church’s years of dedicated community care. Designed with the intent to create a community home instead of an institutional facility, we employed a collaborative approach. They engaged closely with stakeholders and user-groups, resulting in a design that emphasizes warmth and accessibility. Our task was to breathe new life into a once somber 1970s brick edifice, whispering echoes of repair and redemption, and to rekindle its purpose as a luminous and functional community center.

This unique design offers features typically seen in high-end architecture, making it a rewarding experience, especially knowing it caters to those who might not otherwise have access such facilities. Inside, the Hub boasts tall ceilings and ample operable glazing, ensuring natural ventilation and visual connections to the neighbourhood. This design keenly integrates views of mature trees and greenery from the surrounding area.

The once dimly lit spaces have given way to an ethereal luminosity, creating a sanctuary where sunlight dances on the walls and ushers in a newfound sense of warmth and belonging that fosters spiritual reflection and community engagement.
